An Amazing Excursion to Pisa

Just few kilometers from Livorno, approximately 30, there is the wonderful city of Pisa, a monumental town between the coast and the green heart of Tuscany. If your cruise stops in the port of Livorno, just take the chance to get to Pisa to visit Piazza dei Miracoli, the famous Cathedral Square of the town. The first thing you will see is the Leaning Tower, well known as the Tower of Pisa, as it became the most famous image of the city and an icon, too. Just clicking on the link, easily, you can book a private shore excursion to Pisa, in order to get easily to the city and to visit the most important places supported by a tourist guide who speaks your language and that can explain you everything you want to know about the artistic attractions you will see. In the Piazza dei Miracoli you will find four impressive architectural masterpieces: the tower, the Baptistery of St. John, the St. Mary of the Assumption medieval cathedral and the monumental cemetery.

The 12th century cemetery, or Camposanto Monumentale, is a huge construction with a inner courtyard and a hallway that contains a great collection of Roman sarcophagi, an archaeological museum and four of the best frescoes of the XV century called "the triumph of the death". Some art historian have linked those frescoes to the Boccaccio's novel "the Decameron" as in there it appears a group of seven girls and three boys such as in the frame of the well-known literary work and it exposes, through the paintings on the wall, the Black Death that affected the whole country (and almost all Europe) in the years from 1347 to 1353.

The Baptistery of St. John, a marble construction, is one of the most important example of the passage to the Gothic architecture. Although the base of the Baptistery is still in a late Romanesque style, the upper part, with the typical lancet arches, is fully Gothic. Inside, you can find the famous pulpit by Nicola Pisano, wonderful stained-glass windows and the font made by Guido Bigarelli da Como. Then, the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, a precious church full of artistic details: apse with mosaic, a spectacular coffer ceiling made of bronze, painted lunettes and marble pulpits. The frontal part of the Cathedral is in grey marble and it has a massive bronze main doors that obviously have replaced the ancient wooden ones. The architectural ensemble is really impressive and worth going to see it.
